Dani Rodrik has a great post on life post MDGs. The only thing I disagree with is his claim that the Goals were ambitious. In fact, most of the targets were simply extrapolations of pre-existing global trends. Here (pdf) is Jan Vandemortelle (who was involved in the drafting of the MDGs and so should probably know):

Most of the global targets are based on historical trends. They were set on the premise that progress observed at the global level over the previous 25 years would continue for the next 25 years – the period from 1990 to 2015. Thus, the MDGs are essentially an extrapolation of global trends of the 1970s and 1980s and projected forward till 2015.

The MDGs have been a lot of things, but they certainly weren’t ambitious.
