Link to Self — Iwi, Treaty Settlements and Maori Welfare

Filed under: Random Musings — terence @ 8:46 am

Tim Watkins with a great post on why we (Pakeha New Zealanders) need to honour the Treaty of Waitangi (rectifying historical injustices), what we can realistically expect Iwi to achieve with the money WRT to the welfare of Maori, and what Iwi actually do.

I think it’s fair to say that the typical Pakeha New Zealander labours under the impression that: treaty settlements are massive and mostly squandered by recipient Iwi. Tim’s post does a great job of showing – via an illustrative case – that neither of these beliefs are correct. It’s a real pity for race relations in New Zealand that this isn’t better understood.
